The House

A view of our 113 year old home.

Known as Powell House, the home was built in 1899 by local businessman J.P. Powell. It is an excellent example of Saunders & Howell work with its panelling and moldings that were of the time but very unique to the area. Mr. Powell was a succesful businessman, who was raised in Crockers Cove on Burnt Head Road. He hired Sanders and Howell build his house and  was so impressed with their workmanship that he formed a construction company with the men, known as Sanders & Howell. With Mr. Powell’s involvement they grew to become one of the foremost contractors in Newfoundland in the early 20th century, building not only homes but schools and government buildings across the island.

The house is a two and a half story subdued Victorian with numerous windows allowing the sun to warm the original wood paneling and hardwood floors. The cove moldings and trim, the staircase and many of the light fixtures and brass door knobs have been retained. Two of the original four fireplaces are in working order and on cold nights with the fires going it is easy to imagine life as it was. There are even bells for ringing the housekeeper though no one answers anymore. The front door opens into an east facing conservatory whose sunlight is ideal for plants.

The house sits comfortably on an acre of gardens and lawn. According to local information, in Mr. Powell’s time the property was so large and so well tended, he had a full time gardener. While the gardens haven’t survived over the century, there has been a resurrgence of activity and the gardens are being restored. As well as an orchard, there is a secret garden with a tree house for children’s imaginations.

As you approach the house on Water Street you will be struck by the trees lining each side of the street. Mr. Powell arranged for these trees to be brought from England and planted for his neighbours to enjoy. We invite you to enjoy this piece of history that has moved so comfortably into the 21st century.

  1. Thank you to Marcia for the warm and relaxed three nights at O’Neill House. My bed was very comfortable- a great sleep. Breakfast was wonderful- home cooked and more than I could possibly eat. Freshly baked muffins and sticky buns were a special treat. I was pleasantly surprised that I would enjoy sharing a meal with complete strangers.
Thank you for the great company and conversations…and berrypicking!
